As a seasoned NYC elopement photographer, one of my favorite things is to tell couples that they have the option to have a ceremony that doesn’t have to take place at the NYC Marriage Bureau. You can choose to personalize your celebration even further by creating a unique and romantic experience in nature that aligns with your vision. From the iconic skyline, vibrant culture, and diverse neighborhoods, New York City offers a plethora of stunning parks for couples seeking a unique and intimate elopement experience.

One such experience is to have your elopement celebration at a beautiful park. All you will need is a valid marriage license and a registered officiant to preside over the ceremony.

So, without further ado, here are my personal recommendations as an NYC elopement photographer for the top five NYC parks.

*Most parks in NYC do not require a permit to hold a small gathering of less than 20 people unless specifically noted on their website or if you have logistics that require load in or load out. You can read more about the rules of special event concessions of NYC Parks to see what level your park falls under along with their event thresholds.

Central Park

Considered one of most iconic green spaces in the world, Central Park provides an enchanting backdrop for elopements. With its lush lawns, scenic bridges, secluded spots abound within the park’s winding pathways and tranquil glades, this sprawling oasis promises an intimate setting for your celebration. From the romantic canopy of Bethesda Terrace, with the sounds of the Bethesda Fountain in the background to the a charming Shakespeare Garden, surrounded by fragrant blooms; Central Park feels almost limitless.

*While most of Central Park does not require a permit for small 20 person standing ceremonies, you can still apply for a permit if you’d like a particular area of the park to be reserved for a short time during your celebration. This allows you to have the space uninterrupted and free from tourist traffic. Central Park is designated as a Level B park for permit purposes.

Stuyvesant Square Park

Nestled in the heart of Manhattan’s vibrant East Village, Stuyvesant Square Park carries a serene and romantic ambiance. This hidden gem boasts elegant tree-lined pathways, the tranquil Temperance fountain, and beautifully landscaped gardens, making it an ideal setting for an intimate elopement ceremony. Choose a secluded spot under the shade of towering trees or exchange vows amidst the colorful blooms of the park’s flower beds, creating memories to cherish for a lifetime.

*Stuyvesant Park is designated as a Level D park for permit purposes.

Elizabeth Street Garden:

I find Elizabeth Garden’s whimsical and eclectic setting, a unique backdrop for a memorable elopement. This enchanting community garden in SoHo features a stunning array of sculptures, ornate fountains, and lush greenery, evoking a sense of old-world charm and romance in the midst of the robust and modern metropolis that is New. York City. Nothing says ‘old world charm’ like exchanging vows surrounded by vintage statues and blooming flowers, creating a magical atmosphere that reflects the spirit of true love and adventure. For more information on how to apply for a permit for wedding celebrations, you can fill out an application here.

Elizabeth Garden technically does not fall under the NYC Parks umbrella since it became a non-profit org in 2016 and is run by independent and community led volunteers who dedicated to preserving the park’s legacy and keeping it from falling into disarray or being sold to developers.

Conservatory Garden

Tucked away within Central Park’s northeastern corner, the Conservatory Garden is a hidden oasis of tranquility and beauty. This meticulously landscaped garden showcases a stunning array of seasonal flowers, manicured lawns, and elegant fountains, providing an idyllic setting for a romantic elopement ceremony. You can choose vibrant colors of the Italianate Garden with the wisteria pergola or opt for a classic affair in the timeless setting of the English Garden. Either way, the Conservatory Garden promises to the best supporting actor in your wedding production. While the Conservatory Park is a part of Central Park it has a different set of rules when it comes to events and photography. Fort Tryon Park

Perched high above the Hudson River in Upper Manhattan, Fort Tryon Park offers sweeping views of the city skyline and a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle below. This picturesque park is home to the enchanting Heather Garden, a lush landscape adorned with colorful blooms, winding pathways, and stunning vistas. Exchange vows surrounded by the beauty of nature, with the majestic Cloisters Museum as your backdrop, creating an unforgettable setting for your elopement ceremony.

New York City’s parks offer a myriad of enchanting settings for couples looking to elope in style. Whether you prefer the timeless charm of Central Park, the whimsical allure of Elizabeth Street Garden, or the tranquil beauty of Fort Tryon Park, each of these top five parks provides a romantic backdrop for a memorable celebration of love and commitment.

*Fort Tryon Park is designated as a Level C park for any permit purposes.
